With The Dark Knight behind us and 2008 quickly coming to an end, we’ve already had two major titles pushed back (Half Blood Prince and Watchman), one has to wonder what do we have to look forward to in 2009? The following is a list of 11 blockbusters that you may want to keep an eye out for and most definitely get off your ass to go see.
11. Inglorious Bastards

Director: Quinten Tarantino
Cast: Brad Pitt, Diane Kruger, Eli Roth, B.J. Novak, and Samuel Jackson as the narrator
Why you’ll like it: Based in France during World War II, the movie follows a group of Jewish-American soldiers who were known as “The Bastards”. A group of soldiers chosen specifically t spread fear throughout the Third Reich by scalping and brutally killing Nazis. With Tarantino behind the camera I’m hoping this will be Saving Private Ryan with an insane amount of slaughtering and brutality.
10. Transformers – Revenge of the fallen

Director: Michael Bay
Cast: Megan Fox, Shia LaBeouf, Josh Duhamal, John Turturro, Tyrese Gibson,
Why you’ll like it: The first Transformers was not too shabby. Good action, good characters and of course an incredible creation known as Megan Fox. The plot for the second one seems pretty solid and there will be additions to both sides. (Fingers crossed for Unicron or the real Devastator)
I’m hoping Michael Bay can get his shit together and actually pull off a bigger badder sequel than his first installment.

9. Avatar
![]()
Director: James Cameron
Cast: Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver, Giovanni Ribisi,
Why you’ll like it: A big budgeted sci-fi movie with the always awesome James Cameron (Terminator 2, True Lies, Titanic) directing, the film is about a futuristic earth that findsĀ a new planet called Alpha Centuri B-4, and for the scientists and astronaughts who have traversed the journey betweeen the two suns, they find a planet filled with incredible diversity, treasures and resources beyond immagination. A wounded ex-marine who is thrust into an effort to settle and exploit an exotic planet, who eventually crosses over to lead the indigenous race in a battle for survival.
8. The curious case of Benjamin Button

Director: David Fincher (Fight Club, Se7en)
Cast: Brad Pitt, Cate Blanchett, Julia Ormond,
Why you’ll like it: Based on the 1920′s novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald, the movie is about a man who is born in his 80′s. I don’t mean, like, he find himself or has some metaphorical birth, I mean he’s born as an 80 year old man and ages backwards. With Pitt playing the lead, and an unusual story based in New Orleans after the end of World War I, this film should be incredible, if not interesting at the least.
7. Star Trek

Director: J.J. Abrams
Cast: Kris Pine, Zackary Quinto, Eric Bana, Simon Pegg, Wynona Rider, Karl Urban, John Cho, Leonard Nemoy
Why you’ll like it: Wheather your a Trekie or not with this awesome cast – who match up perfectly with the orinals, this film will take a look at the building and genesis of the Star Trek Enterprise and its crew. And judging by the trailers this thing is going to make every other Sci-Fi and space action movie piss its pants. Just hope Abrams can deliver.
6. Sherlock Holmes

Director: Guy Ritchie
Cast: Robert Downey Jr, Judd Law, Rachel McAdams
Why you’ll like it: Guy’s last shittastic disaster “Rockenrolla” was nowhere near the level of his previous films. But now that Guy has devorced that wretched, Golem like creater known as his ex-wife Madonna, I’m hoping he brings his A-game on this one. Sherlock Holmes is an awesome character and I’ve been hoping that someone would do a new version of this Arthur Conan Doyle classic, and RDJ and Judd Law will play the perfect Holmes and Watson.
5. Angels and Demons

Director: Ron Howard
Cast: Tom Hanks, Ayelet Zurer, Ewan McGregor
Why you’ll like it: I liked the first one but I’ve never been a big fan of Dan Browns novels. Every one of them seems to be the same thing rehashed. But non the less if you enjoyed the Da Vinci Code then you are most likely going to dig this prequel about a murder in the Vatican and an Illuminati conspiracy etc etc.
4. Public Enemies
Director: Michael Mann (Collateral, The Aviator, Ali)
Cast: Johnny Depp, Christian Bale, Channing Tatum, Billy Crudup, Leelee Sobieski
Why you’ll like it: Johhny Depp and Christian Bale teeming up to play out the story of one of America’s most notorious and bad ass bank robbers John Dillinger. Depp plays Dillinger and Bale plays the FBI’s top agent Melvin Purvis.

3. X-Men Origins: Wolverine

Director: David Hood
Cast: Huge Jackman, Ryan Reynolds, Leiv Schreiber
Why you’ll like it: Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool, Leiv Schreiber playing a bad ass Sabertooth, and finally everyones favorite Cajun – Gambit will be making his big screen debute played by Taylor Kitsch. Other characters from the comic book who will be featured in the movie which will reveal the history and origins or Wolverine, will be Emma Frost AKA the White Queen, Beak, Agent Zero, The Blob and Scott Summers.
2. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

Director: David Yates
Cast: Same as the previous movies
Why you’ll like it: I don’t really need to explain this do I? It’s f*cking Harry Potter. Enough Said.
1.Watchmen

Director: Zack Snyder (300)
Cast: Jeffery Dean Morgan, Carla Gugino, Malin Akerman, Billy Crudup, Patrick Wilson, Jackie Earl Haley, Matthew Goode
Why you’ll like it: What the Dark Knight did for 2008, Watchmen will do for 2009. This movie is going to f*cking blow peoples minds. Based on what many consider the greatest comic book and most eligently crafted story of all time. Watchmen is set in a gritty and alternate 1985 the glory days of costumed vigilantes have been brought to a close by a government crackdown, but after one of the masked veterans is brutally murdered an investigation into the killer is initiated. The reunited heroes set out to prevent their own destruction, but in doing so discover a deeper and far more diabolical plot.
And when it comes to bringing comic books to life on the big screen there is no one better than Zack Snyder. Snyder pretty much shot 300 frame for frame following the comic book, and with early screen caps coming out from Watchmen it looks like he has gone and done the same, thank God.
Other blockbusters to watch our for:
This side of the truth
I really wanted to put this one in the actual list but it got slightly nudged out. Writen, directed and starring Rickey Gervais. The concept is about a world where lies don’t exist. No one knows how to lie or even what one is. *Brilliant*
Gervais’ character is the first man who discovers how to lie and the plot follows him as he uses his new ability to benefit himself. If you know who Gervais is, then you – much like me, are expecting big, funny, awkward things from this movie.
On a side note, Gervais has got an unreal comedic cast backing him on this one. Also starring Tina Fey, Jonah Hill, Jason Bateman, Jennifer Garner, Patrick Stewart, Rob Lowe, Jeffery Tambor (the dad from Arrested Development), and Christopher Guest (Lead singer in the mocumentary “This is Spinal Tap”)
All I can say is, f*ck me this is gonna be good.

Stumble it!

Very, very cool list. We did our own 2009 list and you hit a lot that we missed or left off for various reasons. I think we counted Benjamin Button as a 2008 movie (even though most people are going to see it in 2009), leaving off Michael Mann’s Public Enemies was a BIG oversight on our part, and I think we were too unsure whether Inglorious Basterds was actually going to come out in 2009 to have it make our list.
Still, nice list. Well done.

We don’t really know so much about Avatar yet (besides that pretty vague synopsis Fox released),but I am really looking forward to it anyway. I wonder if it will ONLY be in 3D though…
Completely forgot about Public Enemies- with Depp AND Bale it will be pretty big.

Pretty freaking nice list. I’m eager to see each and every single one of these movies… well maybe except Transformers 2. Never been a fan and I’m not expecting much again if Michael Bay is directing again.
Watchmen looks sick. I really have my hopes up for that one. Seems like they are sticking with the source material. We’ll find out soon.
I didn’t know about the new Tarantino movie. Very interesting.
Keep on rocking.

Angelus, long time no see, glad to see your still checking in here.
Yeah this is going to be a stellar year for movies. Watchman has be absolutely stoked. It’s just like 300, Snyder shoots them frame for frame from the source material. Which I dig, I don’t care about the directors vision and how he interprets the story (X-men series), just take what I love in the books and do it on the big screen.

Great list. Thanks

And what about Terminator Salvation?
December 20th, 2008 at 6:13 am
Meh, I think they might be kicking a dead horse with that franchise. The last one was sub-par and I don’t know if this one is going to be T2 level of not.
